The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. At the time, Americans were using leaded gas in huge inefficient cars. Industry created smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad news reports. Air pollution was accepted as the smell of prosperity. It was a bad time for the Earth.
